Moving Fridge & Washing Machine in Dubai: Step-by-Step

21 April 2026By SAMA Movers Team

Half the washing machines in Dubai are moved with the transit bolts still in the garage where the original delivery guys left them. That decision lives in the laundry room as a loud, vibrating drum on every spin cycle for the next ten years. Moving large appliances in Dubai has specific gotchas: compressor oil rules that mean fridges can only travel upright, gas lines that need licensed disconnection, and a 24-hour defrost that most people skip and regret.

Here's the proper playbook for moving fridges, washing machines, and large kitchen appliances without voiding warranties or turning your new apartment into a noisy mess.

Fridge: The 24-Hour Rule

Refrigerators must defrost for a minimum of 24 hours before transport. Most people skip this or cut it to 3-4 hours. What actually happens:

  • Compressor oil settles back into the compressor (critical — oil in transit lines during tilting creates internal damage)
  • Ice and frost melt, letting you drain the drip tray
  • The freezer drum dries out so water doesn't slosh during transport

The proper sequence: unplug 24 hours before the move, leave the doors open (or wedge them with a towel), place old towels on the floor around the fridge to catch melt. On move day, wipe everything dry, secure the shelves with tape or remove them, and tie the doors closed with rope or bungee cords — never packing tape directly on the door surface (it leaves residue that's hell to remove in Dubai heat).

Fridge: Upright Only, Or You Void the Warranty

Every major manufacturer — Samsung, LG, Bosch, Whirlpool, Panasonic — voids the compressor warranty if the fridge is tilted more than 45° during transport. Side-doors (French door models especially) are worse: anything beyond 30° risks permanent coolant line damage.

If a fridge must be laid down (tight stairwell, low ceiling truck), leave it upright for a matching number of hours after arrival before plugging in. 2 hours down = 2 hours upright recovery. 4 hours down = 4 hours upright. Longer is safer. Plugging in a fridge that was laid flat and immediately powered up is the single fastest way to kill a compressor.

Washing Machine: Transit Bolts Are Non-Negotiable

Every front-loading washing machine ships with 3-4 transit bolts at the back. These lock the drum so it can't swing during transport. Most Dubai expats either:

  • Lost the bolts during the original installation (the delivery guy kept them or left them on the floor)
  • Never knew they existed
  • Know but think "it'll be fine" for a 20-minute truck ride

Without transit bolts, the drum suspension springs stretch and bounce during transport. Damage signs: excessive vibration, noisy spin cycles, premature bearing failure within 6-18 months. We've seen Bosch and Samsung machines come out of moves with cracked drum spiders from bolt-free transport.

If you don't have the original bolts, Sharaf DG, Jumbo, and authorized service centres sell replacements for AED 40-80. Ariston, Bosch, LG, and Samsung keep them in stock. Buy, fit, then move.

Washing Machine: Disconnecting the Water

The sequence:

  1. Turn off the water shutoff valve behind the machine
  2. Run a spin-only cycle for 2-3 minutes to drain residual water
  3. Unplug the power
  4. Detach the inlet hose from the machine — water WILL drip; have a towel ready
  5. Detach the drain hose, lift it high, and drain residual water into a bucket
  6. Fit the transit bolts
  7. Wrap the hoses and power cord together, secured to the back of the machine

Don't skip draining the drain hose — in Dubai, water sitting in a hose grows mould inside 48 hours. The smell shows up three weeks after moving in.

Gas Cookers: Dubai Gas Certified Disconnection

Gas cookers and hobs in Dubai are almost always piped from a central building supply (district gas) rather than a standalone LPG cylinder. Disconnecting from a district gas supply requires a licensed gas technician. DIY disconnection is illegal and insurance-voiding.

The process:

  • Book a licensed Dubai Gas-affiliated technician via your building management or Taskrabbit-type platforms
  • Technician disconnects at the supply valve, caps the line
  • Cooker is now safe to move
  • At destination: another licensed tech connects, pressure-tests, certifies

Cost: AED 150-300 per visit at each end. Total AED 300-600 for a gas cooker move. If you're moving from an LPG-cylinder setup (common in older villas), regulator and hose swapping is simpler but still best done by a licensed tech for insurance.

Electric cookers are easier — you unplug (or have an electrician disconnect hardwired units). Induction hobs are the easiest of all; usually plug-and-play.

Dishwasher: The Forgotten Drain

Dishwashers get ignored and then cause water damage during transport. Before moving:

  • Run a hot empty cycle (no dishes, no detergent) to clean the filter
  • Turn off water supply, disconnect inlet
  • Disconnect drain hose, drain into a bucket (there's always 200-400ml residual)
  • Remove the base kickboard if possible — inspect for residual water underneath
  • Pad the interior with dishcloths to prevent the spray arms banging during transport

Leaving even a cup of water inside means that water leaks out during truck tilting and ruins whatever's below. Classic cause of damaged cardboard boxes on moving day.

Balcony Appliance Moves — The Crane Option

Some Dubai apartments have appliances that literally can't fit back through the door — often because the original installation came through an exterior sliding door via crane, or the door frame was re-fitted after the washing machine went in. If you're moving out of Downtown, Marina, or Business Bay high-rises and you have doubts, confirm before moving day.

Crane lifts for balcony appliance removal cost:

  • Floors 1-10: AED 1,500-2,500
  • Floors 11-25: AED 2,000-3,200
  • Floors 26-40: AED 2,800-4,000
  • Floors 40+: AED 3,500-5,500

RTA permits for crane operations take 3-5 business days and require coordination with the building's property management. Budget 2 weeks of lead time.

Split-AC Units: Usually Stay

In Dubai, split-AC systems are typically landlord-owned and stay with the apartment. If you did install your own (rare, usually in villas), relocation requires:

  • Licensed AC technician to recover refrigerant (R-32 or R-410A; illegal to vent to atmosphere)
  • Disconnect indoor and outdoor units
  • At destination: reinstall, re-gas, vacuum, pressure-test

Cost: AED 400-800 per split unit for a complete relocation. Make sure the mover and AC tech coordinate timing — AC tech typically comes a day before move-out, and a day after move-in.

What We Charge to Handle It All

Professional mover appliance handling (beyond basic loading/unloading):

  • Fridge with 24-hour defrost management: AED 0 (standard), but you do the defrost
  • Washing machine with transit bolt fitting: AED 80-150 if we supply bolts
  • Gas cooker coordination: AED 200-400 above gas tech cost if we arrange the tech
  • Dishwasher full drain and prep: AED 80-120
  • Split AC relocation (coordinated with AC tech): AED 150-300 coordination fee
  • Balcony crane lift: passthrough cost + AED 300-500 coordination

Most clients handle fridge defrost themselves and use our furniture moving service for the physical transport with transit bolt support on washing machines. It's usually cheaper to self-manage the pre-move prep and let professionals handle the transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I defrost my fridge before moving?

24 hours minimum. Unplug the fridge, leave doors open, place towels around the base to catch melt water. This lets compressor oil settle and ice melt fully. Skipping this step risks compressor damage and water leaking inside your moving truck. After arrival, leave the fridge upright and unplugged for at least 4 hours before powering on.

Do I need transit bolts for a washing machine?

Yes, front-loaders need transit bolts or the drum suspension springs stretch and damage the bearings. Replacement bolts cost AED 40-80 at Sharaf DG, Jumbo, or authorized brand service centres. Skipping bolts causes long-term damage — noisy spins, cracked drum spiders, and premature bearing failure within 6-18 months.

Can I disconnect my gas cooker myself?

No. Dubai district gas systems require a licensed gas technician for disconnection and reconnection. DIY work is illegal and voids home insurance. Disconnection costs AED 150-300 per visit; budget AED 300-600 for both ends of the move. Book through building management or a DED-licensed gas contractor at least 48 hours ahead.

How much does a balcony appliance crane cost in Dubai?

Crane lifts for balcony appliance removal cost AED 1,500-2,500 for floors 1-10, AED 2,000-3,200 for floors 11-25, AED 2,800-4,000 for floors 26-40, and AED 3,500-5,500 for floors 40+. RTA permits require 3-5 business days; budget 2 weeks lead time including building management coordination.
