Packing Electronics for a Dubai Move: What the Heat Does to Your Stuff

28 March 2026By SAMA Movers Team

Your Moving Truck Becomes an Oven at 2 PM in July

Here's something nobody thinks about until it's too late: the inside of a moving truck parked in direct Dubai sun reaches 60-65°C. That's hot enough to warp vinyl records, crack phone screens, damage lithium batteries, and melt adhesives holding components together. Your clothes and books don't care. Your electronics absolutely do.

We moved a client's custom gaming PC last August. It was packed well, but the truck sat in traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road for 45 minutes with no shade. The thermal paste on the CPU had softened enough to shift. The machine posted fine, but temperatures ran 8-10 degrees hotter than before the move until the paste was reapplied. That's a best-case scenario.

The Item-by-Item Breakdown

TVs and Monitors

Modern OLED and QLED panels are fragile. Period. The screen itself can crack from pressure, and the backlight diffuser layers can warp from heat.

  • Best case: Original box with original foam inserts. If you still have it, use it. Every time
  • No original box: Custom TV crating costs AED 100-300 depending on screen size. Worth every dirham for anything 55 inches or larger
  • Never: Lay a large TV flat in the truck. Transport upright or at a slight angle. Flat transport puts pressure on the centre of the screen
  • Temperature tip: Load TVs last so they spend the least time in the truck. If summer, request early morning loading (before 8 AM)

Gaming PCs and Desktops

The biggest risk isn't the case — it's the GPU. Heavy graphics cards (modern ones weigh 1.5-2kg) can snap off the PCIe slot during transport. Remove the GPU and transport it separately in an anti-static bag with foam padding.

  • Remove the GPU, CPU cooler (if it's a tower cooler), and any heavy aftermarket components
  • Fill empty space inside the case with anti-static packing material — prevents components from shifting
  • Photograph all cable connections before disconnecting. You'll thank yourself later
  • Budget: Professional PC packing runs AED 50-100 per machine

Laptops and Tablets

Easier to handle but vulnerable to heat. Lithium batteries can swell or degrade at sustained temperatures above 45°C. Never leave laptops in the truck during a break — carry them in the cabin or take them with you.

Washing Machines

This is where most DIY moves go wrong. A washing machine drum spins freely when not locked. During transport, that free-spinning drum smashes into the internal casing, cracking the tub or damaging the bearings.

  • Transit bolts are mandatory. Every washing machine ships with bolts that lock the drum in place. If you kept them, reinstall them before moving. If you lost them, buy replacements from the manufacturer — typically AED 30-50
  • Disconnect water hoses and drain completely. Residual water causes mould within days in Dubai's humidity
  • Transport upright, never on its side
  • Professional handling costs AED 100-200 per machine (including transit bolt installation if you have them)

Refrigerators and Freezers

Fridges need prep work:

  1. Defrost 24 hours before the move. Unplug, leave doors open, place towels to catch water
  2. Clean interior and remove all shelves (pack separately in bubble wrap)
  3. Tape doors shut — fridge doors swinging open in a truck causes damage and blocks the loading bay
  4. Transport upright. If you absolutely must tilt (narrow doorway), keep it under 45 degrees
  5. After delivery, wait 4 hours before plugging in. The refrigerant needs to settle. Plug in too early and the compressor can fail. That's an AED 800-1,500 repair

Air Conditioning Units (Split/Portable)

Split AC units are typically left in the apartment — they belong to the landlord. But portable units and window units travel with you:

  • Drain all water from the condensate tank
  • Wrap the unit in a moving blanket with special attention to the condenser fins (they bend easily)
  • Keep upright during transport

Voltage: The International Move Trap

The UAE runs on 220V/50Hz using Type G plugs (the three-pin British standard). If you're moving from:

  • UK, Europe, Australia: Same voltage. You may only need a plug adapter (AED 5-10). Most modern electronics are dual-voltage anyway — check the label on the power brick
  • US, Canada, Japan: These countries use 110V. Your packing plan needs to account for this. Most laptop chargers and phone chargers are dual-voltage (100-240V on the label). But appliances — hair dryers, blenders, coffee machines, space heaters — are NOT. Plugging a 110V appliance into 220V will destroy it instantly
  • Transformers exist (AED 100-400 depending on wattage) but they're bulky, generate heat, and add to your electricity bill. For small appliances, it's almost always cheaper to sell in your home country and buy new in Dubai

What NOT to Move: The Sell-and-Rebuy List

Some electronics cost more to move safely than to replace. Honest advice from experience:

  • TVs under 50 inches: A 43-inch 4K TV costs AED 800-1,500 new in Dubai. Custom crating and the risk of damage during a move can approach that price. Sell it and buy fresh
  • Printers: Ink cartridges dry out during transit anyway. A new printer costs AED 200-600
  • Old gaming consoles: PS4, Xbox One — sell and rebuy. The hassle isn't worth it for hardware that's two generations old
  • 110V appliances: Don't bring them. Don't buy a transformer. Just buy the 220V version in Dubai

Items worth moving: high-end gaming PCs, professional monitors, audio equipment, large TVs (65 inches+), and anything sentimental or hard to replace.

Insurance for Electronics During a Move

Standard moving insurance often caps individual item payouts at AED 1,000-2,000. Your gaming PC might be worth AED 8,000. Your 75-inch TV, AED 5,000. Standard coverage won't make you whole.

Ask about declared value coverage — you declare the value of specific items, pay a higher premium (typically 1-3% of declared value), and get covered for the full amount. For a detailed breakdown of moving insurance options, see our coverage guide.

Summer Move Strategy: Timing Is Everything

If you're moving electronics during summer (May-September), schedule strategically:

  1. Start at 6 AM. Load electronics first, before the truck heats up
  2. Request a covered/enclosed truck — not an open pickup. The temperature difference is significant
  3. Electronics go in last at origin, come out first at destination. Minimize their time in the truck
  4. For high-value items (AED 10,000+), ask about climate-controlled vehicles. Not every moving company offers this, but SAMA Movers can arrange it for sensitive loads

For broader summer moving strategies beyond electronics, our summer heat moving guide covers scheduling, hydration, and crew management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Dubai heat damage electronics during a move?

Yes. Moving trucks in direct Dubai sun reach 60-65°C internally — well above the safe operating range for most electronics. Lithium batteries can swell, thermal paste degrades, adhesives soften, and LCD/OLED panels can develop dead spots. Schedule electronics loading for early morning and minimize their time in the truck.

Do I need a voltage converter for US electronics in Dubai?

Most modern chargers (laptops, phones, tablets) are dual-voltage (100-240V) and just need a plug adapter. But US appliances like hair dryers, coffee makers, and blenders run on 110V and will burn out instantly on Dubai's 220V supply. Don't use a transformer — sell these items and buy 220V versions in Dubai.

How long should I wait to plug in a fridge after moving?

Wait at least 4 hours after delivery before plugging in your refrigerator. During transport, the refrigerant oil can flow into the cooling lines. Plugging in too early forces the compressor to work against this displaced oil, which can cause compressor failure — an AED 800-1,500 repair. If the fridge was tilted during the move, wait 24 hours.
