Moving Day in Dubai: An Hour-by-Hour 2-Bedroom Timeline

2 May 2026By Ahmed Khan, Head of Villa Moves

The single most-asked question we get isn't about price. It's "how long will it actually take?" People want to know if they should book a hotel, take Wednesday off work, or risk doing it all in one day. After managing 5,000+ Dubai moves, here's the honest answer: a 2-bedroom apartment move runs 7 to 9 hours from crew arrival to keys-in-hand-at-new-place. And the hour where it usually slips is one most people never plan for.

What follows is the actual hour-by-hour timeline for a typical 2-bed move across Dubai — Marina to Al Jaddaf, JLT to Business Bay, JVC to Mirdif. The exact times shift, but the rhythm doesn't.

The night before: the prep that decides the day

Two things on the night-before checklist that most people miss. First, confirm the service-lift booking at both ends one more time. Building security shifts change at 2pm in many Dubai towers, and the morning guard often hasn't seen tonight's permit. Print the approval email and stick it on the fridge by the front door. Second, charge phones, set up a USB power bank, and pack a "first hour" bag — water, snacks, building permits, lift booking confirmations, and AED 200 in small notes for security tips at both buildings. We've watched too many moves stall because someone has to run to an ATM at 9am.

The full hour-by-hour

This is the standard flow. We've timed it across hundreds of jobs and it doesn't deviate much within Dubai's main residential corridors.

TimeWhat's happeningWhere it slips
7:30amBuilding security at the origin opens the move-out gate. Service lift is unlocked.Night-shift guard hasn't been briefed; permit not on file. Add 30 mins.
8:00amCrew arrives at origin. Walkthrough, blanket protection on lift walls, floor protectors down on marble.Crew traffic-delayed coming from another job. 15-30 min slip is common.
8:15amLoading begins. Big furniture first, sofa, beds, wardrobes (already disassembled the night before).Items not pre-disassembled. Add 45 mins per wardrobe.
9:30amBoxes loaded on top of furniture. Living and dining rooms cleared first; kitchen second.Boxes not labelled or sealed. The crew won't lift them. Add 30 mins.
11:00amLast items off the floor, fragiles, electronics. Final walkthrough with you for missed items."One more cupboard" syndrome. Plan a real last-look pass.
11:30amTruck departs origin. Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road, depending on route.Crew has lunch break (legitimate; 30 mins). Driver does a fuel stop.
12:30pmTruck arrives at the destination. Service-lift slot at the new building begins (typically 12-3pm).Wrong delivery dock. Marina towers have multiple loading bays. Confirm in advance.
12:45pmUnload starts. Crew reads colour-coded labels (if you used them) and drops by room.Lift slot ends before unload finishes. Negotiate the slot at booking, not on the day.
3:30pmFurniture reassembled. Beds set up first, then dining table, then wardrobes if requested.Toolkit not on truck. Reassembly fee added if needed.
5:00pmCrew sweeps both apartments, removes packing waste, signs off paperwork. Final tip.Damages reported only after crew leaves. Inspect every room before they sign off.

Add or subtract 30-45 minutes depending on building height (above 30 floors slows the lift), distance (anything beyond Al Khail or out to The Valley adds 45 mins), and whether you booked packing services for moving day itself (which adds 1.5-2 hours at origin).

The hour where most moves slip: 11am-12pm

Look at the table above. The transition from "loading at origin" to "driving to destination" is where the wheels come off most often. Three reasons.

First, you're tired. The morning has been adrenaline. By 11am you've been on your feet four hours, you've snapped at someone, and you want to leave. So you wave the crew off without doing the proper walkthrough, and three days later you find your bedside drawer in the kitchen of the old apartment.

Second, traffic spikes. Sheikh Zayed Road northbound after 11:30am is the slowest hour of the day in non-summer months. Plan for it. If you can finish loading by 10:45 and get the truck moving by 11, you save 25-40 minutes versus a noon departure.

Third, the destination building's service-lift slot is often booked 12-3pm, and a slow morning turns into a panicked unload because you've used up half the slot in transit. The fix: book a 2-5pm slot if your loading is unhurried, or a 12-3pm slot only if you can confirm a 7:30am crew start.

Where the slip multiplies, building service-lift

The single factor that most often extends move-day hours is a service-lift slot that runs short or gets cancelled. Most Dubai towers, Marina Pinnacle, Cayan, JLT clusters, the Address Residences in Downtown, book service lifts in 3-hour blocks. If you arrive 45 minutes late, you have 2 hours and 15 minutes left, and the unload doesn't fit.

Three things that protect the slot. Get the booking confirmation in writing 5 days ahead. Tip the guard AED 50 in cash on arrival, buys you flexibility on overrun. And have the receiving building's move-in permit approved at least 48 hours before move-day, not the morning of.

What happens if you can't finish in one day

Sometimes the timeline doesn't fit a single day. Reasons we see: late afternoon arrival permit at the destination, a 200-piece villa move, or a cross-emirate move from Dubai to Sharjah where Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road eats two hours each way. Three options:

  • Overnight in the truck. Some Dubai movers, including us, offer secure overnight storage in a parked truck for AED 600-900. Useful if the destination's service lift opens the next morning.
  • Two-day move. Loading on day one, transport and unload on day two. Adds AED 1,200-2,000 to a typical 2-bed quote, but the crew doesn't burn out and your unpack starts fresh.
  • Self-storage transition. Park the contents at a self-storage facility, Cube, Just Storage, The Box, overnight. Same-day collection the next morning. Costs AED 400-700 plus storage rental.

What a 2-bed move actually costs in this timeline

Pricing aligns with the timeline. A 2-bed apartment move in Dubai runs AED 1,800-2,400 on a weekday with no packing. AED 2,400-3,200 on a weekend. AED 3,200-4,500 with full packing service. Add AED 200-400 for furniture disassembly + reassembly. Add AED 400-700 for any cross-emirate run. Our movers cost guide breaks the line items down further.

What changes for a villa or 3-bed

The shape of the day stays the same; the durations stretch. A 3-bedroom apartment runs 9-11 hours. A 4-bed villa with kids' rooms, study, and maid's room is a 12-14 hour job that almost always becomes a two-day move. Our villa moving service defaults to a two-day plan for anything 4-bed or larger, same crew both days, secured overnight, fresh unload.

How to take the timeline pressure off

Three changes get the day back inside its window. Disassemble wardrobes and beds the night before, saves 90 minutes. Pre-label and pre-seal every box, saves 30 minutes at origin and 45 at destination. Book the service lift for 2-5pm rather than 12-3pm, which gives you a buffer if the morning runs slow.

If your move is happening into Dubai Marina or any 30-floor-plus tower, the service-lift slot is almost certainly the bottleneck. Treat the lift as the project's critical path; everything else is secondary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a 2-bedroom apartment move take in Dubai?

A 2-bedroom apartment move typically runs 7 to 9 hours from crew arrival to final sign-off, assuming a same-city move and pre-disassembled furniture. That breaks down to roughly 3 hours loading, 1 hour transit, 2.5 hours unloading and reassembly, and 30 minutes of paperwork and walkthrough at both ends. Cross-emirate moves to Sharjah or Ajman add 1-2 hours of transit alone.

What time should movers arrive on moving day in Dubai?

Crew arrival between 7:30 and 8:00am gives the cleanest day. Building service lifts at most Dubai towers are scheduled in 3-hour blocks starting 9am, so an early load gets you to the destination before lunch. Later arrivals, 9-10am, push the unload into post-3pm slots and risk running out of service-lift time on the receiving side.

Can I move a 2-bedroom apartment in Dubai in a single day?

Yes. Around 90% of 2-bed Dubai moves complete in one day when the building service lifts are booked correctly and the furniture is disassembled the night before. The 10% that don't are usually cross-emirate runs, late-afternoon permit slots at the destination, or jobs where packing happens on move-day itself rather than ahead of time. Plan an 8am crew start to keep one-day completion realistic.

What's the most common reason a Dubai move runs late?

Service-lift slot mismatch. The crew runs 30-60 minutes late at the loading end (often through no fault of theirs, traffic, prior job overrun) and arrives at the destination with insufficient lift time remaining. The fix is to book a 2-5pm destination slot rather than 12-3pm, giving the morning a buffer. Second most common is late wardrobe disassembly, which adds 45 minutes per wardrobe.
