The Moment You Realize Half Your Furniture Isn't Worth Moving
We do a pre-move survey for every job. And almost every time, halfway through the walkthrough, the client points at something — a dining table, a wardrobe, a saggy sofa — and says, "Actually, that's not coming." The question that follows is always the same: "What do I do with it?"
If you're moving to a smaller apartment, upgrading from IKEA to something nicer, or leaving Dubai entirely, you're going to have furniture to get rid of. The good news is Dubai has more options for this than most people realize. The bad news is that most of them need 2–4 weeks of lead time, so you can't decide three days before your move.
Option 1: Sell It on Dubizzle (Start 3 Weeks Before)
Dubizzle is still the default marketplace for second-hand furniture in Dubai. List your items at least three weeks before your move date. Why that long? Because the first week gets you the lowball offers. The second week is when reasonable buyers show up. The third week is your "take any reasonable offer" window.
Pricing reality for used furniture in Dubai:
- IKEA sofa (2–3 years old) — Expect 30–40% of original price. A KIVIK that cost AED 3,000 sells for AED 900–1,200.
- Dining table set — AED 500–1,500 depending on brand and condition.
- King bed frame + mattress — AED 400–800 (mattresses are hard to sell; most buyers only want the frame).
- Wardrobes — Almost impossible to sell unless they're freestanding designer pieces. Built-in wardrobes are the landlord's problem.
Pro tip: take photos in natural daylight, mention the community you're in (buyers filter by location), and include dimensions. "Brown sofa, good condition" gets ignored. "IKEA KIVIK 3-seat sofa, 228cm, dark grey, Springs community" gets responses.
Facebook Marketplace and the ExpatWoman classifieds are secondary options. They move slower but reach different audiences. List on all three simultaneously.
Option 2: Donate to Charity (Free Pickup Available)
If your furniture is in decent condition but you don't want to deal with buyers haggling over AED 50, donation is the easiest path. Several organizations offer free pickup — you don't even need to carry anything downstairs.
Dar Al Ber Society
The largest charity in Dubai. They accept furniture, appliances, and household items in working condition. Free pickup across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman. Call 800 22 444 or WhatsApp to schedule. They usually pick up within 3–5 business days. They'll take sofas, beds, dining tables, washing machines, fridges — basically anything that still works.
Beit Al Khair Society
Similar service, free pickup, focuses on supporting low-income families in the UAE. They're pickier about condition than Dar Al Ber — furniture with visible damage or stains will be rejected.
Red Crescent UAE
Accepts donations but their pickup service is less consistent. Best for larger donations (if you're clearing an entire apartment's worth of furniture, they'll prioritize you). Call 800 7332.
All three charities provide donation receipts, which some employers accept as tax documentation for home-country filings.
Option 3: Free Junk Removal Services
This is the option most people don't know about. Several companies in Dubai will pick up your unwanted furniture for free — they make money by reselling usable items and recycling materials from the rest.
800 Junk
WhatsApp +971 54 566 8618 with photos of what you need removed. They'll tell you within hours whether it qualifies for free pickup (usable items) or if there's a charge (damaged goods). Free pickups happen within 24–72 hours. For items they can't resell or donate, they charge AED 200–500 per load.
TakeMyJunk UAE
Free collection for furniture that can be reused. They focus on the donation and upcycling pipeline — about 70% of what they collect goes to families in need rather than recyclers. Schedule via their website or WhatsApp. Turnaround is typically 2–4 days.
Free Junk Dubai
Newer service, operates mainly through Instagram and WhatsApp. They're smaller but faster — often same-day pickup for usable items. Good for last-minute clearances when you're running out of time before the move.
Option 4: Dubai Municipality Free Collection
Dubai Municipality offers free bulky waste collection for residential properties. Request it through the Dubai Now app or call 800 900. A crew will come to your building and collect large items — furniture, mattresses, broken appliances.
Important limitations:
- Not available in all areas — Discovery Gardens, parts of Palm Jumeirah, and some free zone communities fall outside the service zone.
- You need to bring items to the building's designated waste area — they won't come up to your apartment.
- Response time is 5–10 business days, so plan accordingly.
- They'll take broken items that charities and junk companies reject, which makes this the fallback for everything else.
Option 5: Commercial Disposal (When Nothing Else Works)
Some furniture is too damaged to donate, too heavy to sell, and too bulky for municipal pickup. In that case, commercial disposal is your last resort.
Al Quoz has several recycling centres that accept furniture for dismantling. Wood gets recycled, metal gets scrapped, foam gets processed. Drop-off is usually free; pickup costs AED 100–300 per load depending on volume and location.
Colour Code Waste Treatment in Al Quoz specializes in zero-landfill furniture disposal. They dismantle everything and route materials to appropriate recycling streams. If environmental impact matters to you, they're the best option. Pickup costs AED 300–500 for a standard apartment's worth of unwanted furniture.
The Timeline: When to Do What
If your move is in four weeks, here's the ideal sequence. Don't try to do all of this in the last three days — we've watched people try and it never ends well.
- Week 1: Walk through your home. Decide what's moving and what's not. Photograph everything that's staying behind. Start by reading our decluttering guide if you need help deciding.
- Week 2: List sellable items on Dubizzle, Facebook Marketplace, and ExpatWoman. Price them to sell, not to profit. You're clearing, not running a business.
- Week 3: Whatever hasn't sold, contact Dar Al Ber or TakeMyJunk for donation pickup. Schedule pickups for the end of the week.
- Week 4: Anything remaining goes to 800 Junk (if usable) or Dubai Municipality (if damaged). Schedule your movers for the end of this week through our apartment moving service.
By the time our crew arrives, the only items in your apartment should be the ones getting loaded onto the truck.
What About Leaving Furniture for the Landlord?
Some tenants assume they can leave furniture in the apartment for the next tenant. Unless your landlord explicitly agrees to this in writing, don't. You'll get charged for disposal from your security deposit — and landlords will inflate that cost. We've seen AED 1,500–3,000 deducted from deposits for "furniture removal" that would have cost the tenant AED 0 if they'd called Dar Al Ber.
If your landlord does want the furniture, get it in writing. A WhatsApp message confirming "I'm happy for you to leave the dining table and sofa" protects you during the move-out inspection. Without it, the next property manager could claim you abandoned property and charge you.
SAMA Movers Can Handle Disposal Too
If you're using us for your move, ask about our furniture removal add-on. We'll take the items you don't want, load them separately, and route them to donation or recycling partners. It's AED 200–400 on top of your moving quote, and it means you only deal with one company instead of three. Get a free estimate and mention "furniture disposal" in the notes.
Frequently Asked Questions

How much does junk removal cost in Dubai?
Usable furniture is often collected for free by services like 800 Junk and TakeMyJunk UAE, who resell or donate items. Non-usable furniture costs AED 200–500 per load for pickup and disposal. Dubai Municipality offers free bulky waste collection through the Dubai Now app, though response times are 5–10 business days.
Can I leave old furniture in my Dubai apartment when moving out?
Only if your landlord agrees in writing. Without documented consent, the property manager can deduct AED 1,500–3,000 from your security deposit for "furniture removal."
