How to Protect Furniture When Moving in Dubai: Packing Guide

14 March 2026By SAMA Movers Team

Why Furniture Protection in Dubai Is Different

Protecting furniture during a move is important everywhere — but Dubai's climate introduces specific risks that you won't read about in generic moving guides. With outdoor temperatures reaching 45°C in summer and humidity spiking above 90% in coastal areas, the wrong packing materials can cause more damage to your furniture than a rough journey would. Our team wraps and moves thousands of pieces of furniture each year across Dubai, Sharjah, and Ajman — here's exactly what we've learned about protecting each material type.

The Golden Rule: Match Your Wrapping to the Material

The most common furniture damage we see on arrival isn't from rough handling — it's from inappropriate wrapping materials. Plastic stretch wrap is the default in many markets. In Dubai's heat, it's often the wrong choice.

Leather Sofas and Chairs

Leather and plastic stretch wrap are incompatible in Dubai's climate. When plastic is tightly wrapped around leather in temperatures above 38°C, two things happen: the leather surface overheats and can crack or develop a sticky residue where the plastic adheres, and trapped moisture causes mold on genuine leather. Always use:

  • Breathable cotton furniture blankets (moving blankets) — wrap fully, secure with cloth straps or soft rope only
  • Never use adhesive tape directly on leather surfaces — the adhesive damages the finish
  • For light-coloured leather: add a cotton sheet layer first, then blanket, to prevent any colour transfer from the blanket

Our professional packing service uses premium cotton blankets rated for temperatures up to 60°C — the same standard used for luxury furniture transport.

Solid Wood and Veneer Furniture

Solid wood furniture — dining tables, sideboards, bookcases — is vulnerable to warping and cracking when exposed to rapid temperature change. The transition from a 22°C air-conditioned apartment to a 50°C+ truck interior can cause wood to expand or crack along joins. The solution:

  • Wrap entirely in thick moving blankets, not bubble wrap (bubble wrap traps heat against the surface)
  • For veneer surfaces: add a layer of acid-free packing paper before the blanket to prevent blanket fibre marks on the finish
  • Disassemble table legs where possible — reduces risk of leg joints cracking under stress
  • Keep loaded time in the truck as short as possible — aim for under 30 minutes between loading and departure

Where to buy packing materials in Dubai if you're doing a partial self-pack: ACE Hardware (multiple locations) stocks furniture blankets from AED 45–90 each; Carrefour Hypermarkets carry bubble wrap and stretch film; Spinney's and Home Box sell moving boxes from AED 5–15 per box.

Glass Surfaces: Tables, Mirrors, and Shelves

Glass tabletops and large mirrors require the most labour-intensive packing. The sequence:

  1. Clean the glass surface — grit between packing layers causes scratches
  2. Apply a strip of blue painter's tape in a star pattern across the glass face — this holds shards together if the glass breaks in transit (a standard practice for all our glass pieces)
  3. Wrap in acid-free packing paper first (prevents plastic from sticking to glass surface)
  4. Then wrap in bubble wrap minimum 5cm thick, secured with packing tape on the bubble wrap only
  5. Add cardboard corner protectors to all four corners
  6. Stand glass pieces on their edge in the truck — never flat. Flat glass is 4× more likely to break under the weight of vibration

For mirrors larger than 120cm: we use custom wooden crates at an additional cost of AED 200–350 per large mirror. For client pieces worth AED 5,000+, we recommend our professional crating service with full insurance documentation.

Upholstered Sofas and Armchairs (Fabric)

Fabric sofas are more forgiving than leather but still vulnerable to dust, tears, and staining during a move. Use:

  • Plastic stretch wrap is acceptable for fabric sofas — unlike leather, fabric breathes slightly through stretch film and is more tolerant of heat
  • Wrap the entire sofa including all cushions — separately wrap removable cushions in plastic bags to keep clean
  • For white or light-coloured fabric: use a clean white dust sheet under the stretch wrap to prevent grey staining from the film
  • Do not leave plastic-wrapped sofas in direct sunlight at either end of the move

Electronic Appliances and Screens

Televisions and screens are the highest-risk electronics in a Dubai move. LCD and OLED panels can develop dead pixels or panel separation above 50°C — a standard temperature inside a parked truck in June. Best practices:

  • Original box: TV manufacturers design original packaging for thermal protection. If you have it, use it
  • No original box: Wrap the screen face in anti-static bubble wrap, then cardboard both sides, then stand vertically in the truck — never face-down flat
  • Transport large TVs (65"+) in your air-conditioned car or van where possible, or request a climate-controlled moving vehicle (supplement from AED 150)

Protecting Furniture in Dubai Buildings: Elevator and Corridor Damage

A significant proportion of furniture damage in Dubai moves happens not on the road but in building service elevators and ground-floor corridors. Service elevators in towers like Marina Gate, Marriott Harbour, or Business Bay towers are often compact — a standard 2-seater sofa may clear the elevator by just 5–10cm on each side. Without padding on the sofa and elevator walls, scratches are almost inevitable.

When booking your apartment moving service, confirm that your mover:

  • Pads elevator walls before loading (professional movers use adhesive felt pads)
  • Uses furniture dollies with rubber wheels on hard floors (protects both floor and furniture)
  • Has enough crew to safely tilt and angle large pieces through doorways without scraping walls
  • Carries corner wall protectors for all sharp-edged furniture pieces

A Room-By-Room Furniture Protection Checklist

Living Room

  • Sofa: cotton blankets (leather) or stretch wrap (fabric)
  • TV stand / entertainment unit: disassemble, wrap in blankets, transport components separately
  • Coffee table: wrap glass top separately, bag hardware
  • Rugs: roll tightly, cover in plastic tube, do not fold

Bedroom

  • Bed frame: disassemble, label all screws in sealed bags, wrap slats in bundles
  • Wardrobe: remove all contents, wrap external panels in blankets if glass-fronted
  • Dressing table mirror: treat as glass section above
  • Mattress: always use a mattress bag (available ACE Hardware, AED 25–40)

Dining Room

  • Dining table: remove glass inserts (if any), wrap tabletop in blankets, remove and wrap legs separately
  • Dining chairs: stack 4-high with blanket between each, strap together
  • Sideboard / buffet: remove drawers and wrap separately, wrap main body in blankets

When to Hire Professional Packers

Self-packing is cost-effective for books, clothes, and kitchenware. But for these items, we strongly recommend professional packing:

  • Any piece worth AED 3,000+ (antiques, designer furniture, bespoke pieces)
  • All artwork and framed pieces (especially oils and watercolours)
  • Grand pianos and organs (specialised piano moving from AED 800–1,500)
  • Any item you cannot replace if damaged

Get a free packing quote — our professional packing service typically costs AED 300–600 for a 1-bedroom, AED 500–900 for a 2-bedroom, added to your move cost. It includes all materials and full insurance documentation for high-value pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use plastic stretch wrap on leather sofas when moving in Dubai?

No. In Dubai's heat (above 38°C), plastic stretch wrap on leather traps heat and moisture, causing the leather surface to crack, stick, or develop a residue. Always use breathable cotton furniture blankets for leather sofas and chairs, secured with cloth straps — never adhesive tape directly on the leather surface.

Should I transport my TV in the moving truck or my car?

For Dubai summer moves, transport your TV in your air-conditioned car — truck interiors can reach 50–55°C, which can damage LCD and OLED panels. In cooler months, trucks are fine for TVs if properly wrapped in anti-static bubble wrap and transported standing vertically (never flat). For 65"+ screens, consider a climate-controlled moving vehicle.

Where can I buy packing materials in Dubai?

In Dubai, packing materials are available at ACE Hardware (furniture blankets AED 45–90, multiple locations), Carrefour Hypermarkets (bubble wrap, stretch film), Home Box (moving boxes, AED 5–15 each), and IKEA Festival City (boxes and packing paper). Amazon.ae also delivers moving supplies within 1–2 days for orders over AED 100.

How do I protect furniture in building service elevators in Dubai?

Ensure your mover pads elevator walls with adhesive felt pads before any furniture enters the lift, uses rubber-wheeled furniture dollies on hard floors, has enough crew (minimum 2 people) to tilt and angle large pieces safely through doorways, and uses corner protectors on all sharp-edged furniture. Service elevators in Dubai towers are often narrow — measure your sofa and elevator interior dimensions before moving day.
