Moving from Germany to Dubai: What German Families Actually Spend

29 April 2026By Fatima Al Rashid, Customer Success Lead

Hamburg to Jebel Ali takes 21-26 days by sea. The ship leaves the Norddeutsche Affinerie terminal, transits the Suez, and discharges at Container Terminal 4. We've moved 14 German families to Dubai over the last 18 months, mostly out of Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, and the patterns are remarkably consistent: meticulous origin-side paperwork, low-friction customs at both ends, a school decision that wasn't really up for debate, and a discovery on arrival that summer here is harder than the brochure suggested.

The Two Real Origin Ports

For sea freight, German moves go through one of two North Sea ports:

  • Hamburg: 21-26 day transit to Jebel Ali. More frequent sailings (3-4 per week with major lines). Better intermodal connections from Munich, Berlin, and the Ruhr
  • Bremerhaven: 22-27 day transit. Slightly cheaper truck connections from northern Germany. Used heavily for vehicle shipments

Either way, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM run weekly to Jebel Ali via Suez. Costs for a 40ft container are EUR 2,400-3,800 right now, plus origin-side packing and freight forwarder fees that bring the total origin charges to EUR 5,500-8,500 for a typical 3-bed move.

German Export Paperwork (The Easy Part)

This is genuinely smoother than most corridors. EU export documentation for personal effects is well-defined: an Ausfuhranmeldung (export declaration) filed electronically through ATLAS, plus a Spediteursabholung confirming the freight forwarder collected. Personal-effects shipments under EUR 22,000 declared value usually clear within 48 hours.

The one wrinkle: anything bought VAT-free during your last 6 months in Germany (e.g., a car) needs the original VAT exemption paperwork. Without it, German customs may ask questions on export. Keep originals; copies aren't enough.

UAE Customs at Jebel Ali

German shipments tend to get straightforward inspections because the documentation is exemplary. The personal-effects 0% duty applies. Inspection fees run AED 1,500-3,000 for a 40ft container. The full customs clearance typically completes in 3-5 days from container discharge.

Things that occasionally get pulled aside:

  • Knives: Germans pack their kitchen knives. UAE customs is fine with them but a Zwilling block of 12 chef knives sometimes triggers an inspection
  • Wine and spirits: Same as elsewhere — 50% duty applies to imported alcohol. The wine import path matters more than people realise
  • Camping and outdoor gear: Bear spray, propane canisters, anything pressurised gets pulled. Pack these last and ideally not at all

The School Question Settles Most Areas

Of the 14 German families we moved, 11 enrolled kids in the Deutsche Internationale Schule Dubai (DISD) on Al Sufouh Road. One picked the Swiss International Scientific School, two went bilingual at GEMS Wellington. The DISD bus routes shape where families end up:

  • Marina, JBR, Palm: Direct bus routes, 25-35 minutes
  • JLT: Easy bus pickup, 30-40 minutes
  • Arabian Ranches, Mudon, Mira: Possible but the bus run hits 60-75 minutes one-way. Most German families with DISD-bound kids choose Marina or JLT for this reason
  • Dubai Hills, Springs, Meadows: Sweet spot for villa-preference families. 25-minute bus run, family-friendly community

The Tax Residency Decision

Germans moving to Dubai have a specific tax-side decision to make. Germany applies a "wegzugsbesteuerung" (exit tax) on substantial business interests if you've been a tax resident for at least 7 of the last 12 years. For most employees, this doesn't apply. For founders or shareholders with significant equity, the exit tax can be 50% or higher of the unrealised capital gain.

UAE has no income tax for individuals, but you need to spend 90+ days in UAE during a calendar year to qualify for a UAE tax residency certificate. Our UAE tax residency guide walks through the calendar mechanics. The key: don't time your move to land you with split-year residency in both jurisdictions and double obligations.

What Surprises German Movers in the First 60 Days

Several things come up consistently from clients we've stayed in touch with:

  1. The summer is genuinely difficult. German movers expect "hot" but the indoor humidity, dust, and 6 weeks of 45°C+ days is a different experience. Plan to be travelling in August your first year
  2. The cheque culture for rent. Most landlords still want post-dated cheques. Open a UAE current account on day 1 and ask for the chequebook immediately — it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive
  3. The coffee is everywhere but Black Forest cake is hard to find. Pacific Hotel in Karama bakes a passable Schwarzwälder. The Bakery on Al Wasl Road has the closest pretzels
  4. RTA Salik tolls add up. Sheikh Zayed Road plus Al Khail crossings each day for school runs is AED 16-20 daily. Budget for this in school-bus vs self-drive maths

What a Real Germany-to-Dubai Budget Looks Like

Line itemCost (EUR)
Origin packing & loading (Munich/Frankfurt/Hamburg)2,200-3,800
40ft container Hamburg → Jebel Ali2,400-3,800
UAE customs & clearance1,000-1,800
Final delivery & unpacking (Dubai)800-1,200
Insurance (1.5-2.5%)800-1,800
Total realistic range (40ft, 3-bed villa)7,200-12,400

For a 1-bed apartment, a 20ft container or LCL groupage runs roughly EUR 4,500-7,000 all-in. Air freight for the same volume comes in at EUR 8,000-13,000 — usually only worth it if you need goods within 7-10 days.

Where Most Germans End Up

Marina and JLT for the singles and young couples. Dubai Hills and Arabian Ranches for the families with school-age kids. Palm Jumeirah and Emirates Hills for the senior executives. The German community is concentrated enough that there are German-language playgroups in JLT, German doctors at Mediclinic City Hospital, and a small but consistent attendance at the German Embassy events.

Our team handles villa moves into Dubai Hills and apartment moves into JLT and Marina regularly. Villa moves from a 40ft container often take a full day to unload — German shipments tend to be heavier than average because of solid wood furniture and substantial book collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the German School Dubai (DISD) the only German-language school option?

DISD is the only fully German-curriculum school. Swiss International Scientific School Dubai (SISD) offers German as part of its bilingual programme. GEMS Wellington and other British-curriculum schools have German as a second-language option. For families committed to German curriculum continuity (Abitur path), DISD is functionally the only choice.

Can I bring my German driving licence and use it in Dubai?

German licence holders can convert directly to a UAE driving licence without a driving test, provided your residence visa is in place. The process at RTA takes 1-2 hours: vision test, application form, fee of around AED 870. The German licence converts cleanly because Germany is on UAE's pre-approved country list.

What German furniture brands are available in Dubai?

BoConcept (Danish but distributed similarly), Walter Knoll, COR, Vitra, and Hülsta have showrooms in Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, or the d3 design district. Prices run 30-50% higher than Germany. For most movers, it's cheaper to ship existing furniture than re-buy. Bring the receipts and dimensions if you'll need replacement parts later.

Do I need to deregister from Germany before moving?

Yes, file an Abmeldung at your local Bürgeramt within 14 days of leaving. The certificate is required for your UAE residence visa application and helps cleanly end your German tax residency. Don't skip this step — un-deregistered residents have continued tax obligations and the cleanup later is paperwork-heavy.
