Cheap Movers Dubai: What AED 800 Really Buys You

20 April 2026By Omar Hassan, Operations Manager

We collected 14 quotes from Dubai movers advertising 'studio moves from AED 499.' Thirteen of them ended up north of AED 1,400 by move day. The average add-on bill: AED 612. Same day. Same movers. Same van.

This isn't a pitch for hiring us. It's a breakdown of what 'cheap' actually hides — the four line items missing from every sub-AED 1,000 quote, the questions that flush hidden fees out before you sign, and the two legitimate scenarios where a genuinely budget move is safe.

The Four Missing Line Items

Every single quote we analysed was missing at least one of these. Most were missing all four.

1. Packing Materials

A 'move' quote at AED 499-800 almost always excludes boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and mattress covers. These get added on move day at inflated prices: AED 15-25 per box (retail is AED 7-12), AED 35 per mattress cover (retail AED 18-22), AED 25 per roll of tape. A 1-bed apartment typically needs 18-25 boxes. That's AED 270-625 in materials alone, not disclosed upfront.

2. Dismantling and Reassembly

IKEA wardrobes, bed frames with bolts, dining tables with detachable legs — all usually 'included' in the full-service quote from a reputable mover. In the cheap quote, each dismantled piece is AED 50-150 extra. We've seen a quote add AED 720 in dismantle fees on move day for a standard 1-bed worth of furniture.

3. Stairs, Long Carries, or Lift Waits

The cheap quote assumes ground floor and a 10-metre carry from door to truck. Real Dubai buildings rarely match that. Every floor above ground adds AED 30-80. Every 10 metres of extra carry adds AED 20-40. A second-floor walk-up with a 30-metre carry just added AED 200+ to your quote, confirmed at the kerb.

4. Insurance

Sub-AED 1,000 quotes do not include transit insurance. If the mover drops your television, that's your problem. Real transit insurance on even a modest 1-bed load costs AED 80-150 — and legitimate movers include it. 'Cheap movers' outsource the risk to you.

The Forensic Quote Test — Four Questions

Before you book anyone advertising below AED 1,000 for a move, get these in writing:

  1. 'Is this quote all-in, including packing materials, dismantling, and re-assembly?' If they hedge, it isn't.
  2. 'What's the surcharge for floor-by-floor, per flight of stairs, or per additional lift cycle?' A legitimate mover has a clear table. A cheap one says 'we'll see on the day.'
  3. 'Does the quote include transit insurance, and for what declared value?' If the answer is vague or skipped, walk away.
  4. 'Is there a minimum hours guarantee or a cancellation fee if I find a better quote tomorrow?' Many cheap movers require a 50% non-refundable deposit to lock you in. Refuse.

When Cheap Is Legitimately Safe

Two scenarios, and only two, where a sub-AED 800 move is a sensible play in Dubai:

Studio, Under 8km, No Furniture Dismantle Needed

Moving a furnished-by-IKEA studio from Al Barsha to Tecom — 4km, single lift, no white goods, no walk-up? A legitimate budget mover with a basic 1.5-tonne van, two helpers, and AED 600-900 is reasonable. Total work: 2-3 hours. The margin of error is low, so the quote risk is low.

Single-Item or Empty-Flat Moves

Moving one sofa, one fridge, or transferring boxes only (no furniture) from a self-pack? Sub-AED 500 is normal. Our own single-item movers guide walks through when this makes sense.

Real Cost for a Legitimate Dubai Move

UnitBudget All-InMid-Range All-InPremium All-In
StudioAED 800 - 1,100AED 1,200 - 1,600AED 1,800 - 2,400
1-BedAED 1,400 - 1,900AED 2,000 - 2,800AED 3,000 - 4,000
2-BedAED 2,200 - 3,200AED 3,300 - 4,500AED 4,800 - 6,500
3-Bed villaAED 3,800 - 5,500AED 5,800 - 7,800AED 8,000 - 12,000

The budget column already includes packing materials, basic insurance, dismantle, and 4-5 hours of labour. Quotes below those numbers are where the hidden add-ons live. Our line-by-line quote explanation shows what a legitimate quote looks like.

The Dubai-Specific Red Flags

  • No trade licence number on the website. Every legal Dubai mover has a DED licence. Check it on the DED website in 30 seconds.
  • Only WhatsApp contact, no landline or email. Scammers go dark after taking a deposit.
  • 50%+ upfront deposit demanded before a site survey. Legitimate movers survey first, charge after.
  • Quotes given without asking about your floor, lift access, or item count. They're guessing — and will re-price on the day.
  • No company truck in their photos — just generic van images. A real operator shows their fleet.

What We'd Actually Recommend

If you're on a tight budget, don't chase the cheapest quote. Chase the clearest one. A mover who gives you a detailed, itemised, site-surveyed quote for AED 1,400 is cheaper than a mover who quotes AED 799 and bills you AED 1,650 on move day — plus you keep your sanity.

SAMA's packers and movers service includes a free site survey and a fixed-price guarantee. If you want a real number instead of an advertisement, request a quick estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a legitimate Dubai mover under AED 500?

For a true full-service move, no — the labour and truck cost alone is AED 400-500, leaving nothing for materials, insurance, or overhead. Quotes below AED 500 almost always exclude critical items or are for single-van, single-item jobs only. For a genuine studio move, AED 800-1,100 is the honest floor.

Are cheap movers always bad?

No — some smaller operators offer honest, budget-priced service for simple jobs. The problem is the marketing-driven 'cheap movers' space, where a AED 499 ad becomes AED 1,400 at the kerb. Distinguish between transparent low-cost operators (with site surveys and itemised quotes) and bait-pricing operators (vague, WhatsApp-only, deposit-heavy).

Can I negotiate a cheaper price with a legitimate mover?

Yes. Move mid-week instead of weekends (20-30% cheaper), schedule between June-August when demand drops (10-15% off), pre-pack yourself and exclude packing labour, and ask about empty-slot discounts — movers with unfilled Tuesday slots often drop 15% to fill the truck.

Does SAMA price-match cheap movers in Dubai?

We price-match any written, itemised quote from a licensed Dubai mover — not verbal or WhatsApp-only quotes. If a competitor's all-in price for the same scope (materials, insurance, dismantle, floor surcharges) beats ours, we match it. Ads without full breakdowns don't count because they're not comparable.
